Home of the aviation units of the 3rd Infantry  Division (Mechanized) headquartered at Fort Stewart.  Considered to have the premiere power projection platform with a 11,375 ft long runway.  Hunter is also the home of the Savannah U S Coast Guard Station which has the largest helicopter unit in the Coast Guard.  This branch of the military is involved with maritime law, mariner assistance and search & rescue. They provide Savannah and the Southeast U.S. with round the clock search and rescue coverage.

Many Hunter AAF and Coast Guard families live off post.  There are a number of convenient neighborhoods in southside Savannah, Pooler and Richmond Hill that are ideally located to the base.  Including Bradley Point South, Chapel Park and The Villages at Berwick.  These communities are located off of Hwy 17 in Savannah.
